A daughter’s legacy of love

20 Mar 2026

It has been 25 years since Redcliffe’s Karen Wilson lost her father, Derek, to cancer. The pain of his loss hasn’t faded, and neither have her memories of the compassionate care he received in the Redcliffe Hospital Palliative Care Unit.

“It was such a difficult time in my life, losing Dad, but all the staff were just so beautiful,” said Karen.

“Dad had really wonderful care and support, and I’ll always remember that.

“He was a proud independent man his entire life and he was treated with compassion, dignity, kindness and respect. It's so important that our loved ones die with dignity.”

That’s why, when Karen learnt of plans to refurbish the Palliative Care Unit, she didn’t hesitate to donate to Raise it for Redcliffe Hospital.

“It’s my way of saying thank you, it’s my way of honouring my dad - and it’s my way of making sure that other families have the same support, the same care, and the same glimmers of hope that we had - hope that we could get through our darkest moment.”

In 2017, Redcliffe Hospital again provided consideration and support when Karen’s mother passed away, after collapsing unexpectedly. In 2019, Karen was the patient when she broke her ankle and required surgery.

“More and more people are moving to Moreton Bay, and it’s really important to have a hospital that you trust and have good experiences in,” said Karen.

“Whether it’s a child having an accident, a parent or yourself, it’s important to have services and support in place.

“Every dollar raised is a step towards better equipment, more resources and continued kindness. I know how much it matters because I’ve lived it.”
